Gingerbread Potholder

Gingerbread Potholder Pattern

This unique potholder is easy to make using the simple instructions below plus an applique shape from Diane's Sip 'n Sew book, page 158. Add some 4" x 6" recipe cards to the mitt for an awesome gift!

Supplies:

    * 1/3 yd. cotton print fabric

    * 1/3 yd. Insulated batting

    * 1/3 yd. cotton batting

    * 1 pkg. paper-backed fusible web

    * 12" square ruler

    * 1 pkg. medium white rickrack

    * Matching all-purpose thread for sewing and applique

    * Small pieces of wool felt or faux suede for applique
      features

    * Sip 'n Sew book

    * Clear tape or sewer's removable tape

Instructions:

 1. Cut fabric

    * Cut two 10" squares of cotton fabric.

    * Cut one 10" square of insulated batting, such as Insul-
      Bright.

    * Cut one 10" square of cotton batting.

 2. Create loop hangers

    * Cut a 1-1/2" x 4-1/2" strip of cotton fabric.

    * Fold the strip in half lengthwise.

    * Open the strip and fold each edge toward the center.

    * Fold the strip in half again, and stitch.

 3. Layer fabrics

    * Layer insulated batting, cotton batting, and one piece
      of cotton fabric (right side up).

    * Tape the loop hanger to one corner, with raw edges
      together,and the loop facing the center of the fabric.

    * Layer the remaining piece of cotton fabric (right side
      down).

 4. Complete potholder

    * Stitch all layers of the potholder, using a 1/4" seam
      allowance. Leave a 4" to 5" opening to turn.

    * Turn potholder right side out.

    * Remove excess tape at corner.

 5. Create gingerbread boy applique mitt

    * Cut out gingerbread boy using the enlarged pattern
      from the Wake-up Wash Mitts on page 158 of Sip 'n
      Sew book. If fabric isn't heavy enough, use fusible
      web to fuse two layers together.  Pattern should be
      9" from the top of the head to the bottom edge.

    * Serge or zigzag the straight bottom edge to clean
      finish it.

    * Fold the finished bottom up 3/4" with right sides
      together and stitch side edges with an 1/8" seam.
      Turn right side out.

    * Decorate the gingerbread boy with rickrack and wool
      felt or suede features using paper-backed fusible web
      or stitching to secure the pieces.

    * Place the gingerbread boy on the potholder "on point"
      and applique in place through all layers, leaving the
      bottom hem edge open to form the mitt.
